Description
It has been thirty years since the Supreme Court’s decision in Farmer v. Brennan, Dee Farmer’s landmark case that raised the bar for prisons to ensure the safety of incarcerated people, and has been used as precedent in tens of thousands of subsequent cases. Our vision in organizing this workshop is for trans people with lived experience of incarceration, legal practitioners, scholars, advocates, activists, and other community members to come together to discuss and learn from each other. We will build a shared understanding of what trans people need during and after incarceration in order to thrive, and how we can best advance justice for trans people in the carceral system through advocacy, activism, education, and direct support.
The day will be organized around a series of panels and group discussions so that all participants have a chance to share their perspectives. Topics will include a roundup of the present and emerging legal and practical hurdles to justice for trans people during and after incarceration; strategies of support, activism, advocacy, and litigation that have been effective in the past — especially those leading to release — as well as new avenues that are being worked on; and opportunities for meeting each other and collectively organizing and networking around particular topic areas.
