Description: This training will provide a comprehensive overview of asylum law and its application in LGBTQ+ asylum cases. In addition to the basics of asylum law, this training will share best practices working with LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, with a focus on trauma centered lawyering and cultural competency. Eligible for 1 hour elimination of bias and 1 hour general CLE credit. Presented in coordination with Oasis Legal Services and Squire Patton Boggs.

Cost: Free for BALIF members. $25 for nonmembers. 


Presenter: Kusia Hreshchyshyn

Hreshchyshyn is Senior Staff Attorney and Pro Bono Coordinator at Oasis Legal Services. Kusia brings to Oasis nearly 20 years of experience in various aspects of asylum law, having represented asylum seekers in affirmative, defensive, and appellate proceedings. Kusia began working with asylum seekers at the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, where she focused on gender-based affirmative asylum claims. Kusia later served as a Staff Attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to starting at Oasis, Kusia served as an Asylum Officer with the San Francisco Asylum Office.
