Dear BALIF Members,
On May 22nd, the House passed a bill that purports to cut all federal funding for gender affirming care for trans people of any age. It also reduces healthcare funding overall in ways that disproportionately impact the LGBTQ+ community, especially BIPOC members of our community.
The bill now heads to the Senate where a number of Republicans are on the fence about passing it. As noted by The Advocate in Republicans pass ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ banning federally funded gender-affirming care for trans people:
“The federal bill now moves to the Senate, where the margin for passage is even slimmer. At least three Republican senators — Maine’s Susan Collins, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, and Jerry Moran of Kansas — have already voiced concerns about the bill’s impact on Medicaid and rural hospitals, The Hill reports. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has announced he will vote no.”
Please take time today and the next few days to reach out to one or more of the Senators who are on the fence.
Thank you and in solidarity,
BALIF Board
