Mark Fickes is a partner at Cannata O’Toole Fickes & Olson. He began practicing law in 1995 and has tried dozens of civil and criminal cases to verdict in state and federal courts. Mr. Fickes has litigated diverse issues, including land use disputes, class actions, legal and accounting malpractice and fraud, shareholder disputes, breach of fiduciary duty and other commercial disputes. Mark Fickes also has experience litigating cases under the federal civil rights statute, 42 U.S.C. section 1983.
Mr. Fickes has served as a member of the Alameda County Court Appointed Attorneys Program and provided legal defense to individuals charged with crimes when the Alameda County Public Defender is unable to provide representation due to a conflict of interest. He is also a regular faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, teaching in the Deposition and Trial programs.
Mr. Fickes was born in San Francisco, California. He is married with two children. Mr. Fickes has served as President of Temple Beth Abraham in Oakland, Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Contra Costa Jewish Day School, and more recently, he served a member of the Claremont Middle School Parent Teachers Association.
Jeff Kosbie
Treasurer | Judiciary Co-Chair
Jeff Kosbie is an associate at Gibbs Law Group where he represents plaintiffs in class actions and other complex lawsuits involving consumer protection, securities fraud, and employment law. He previously worked as a staff attorney in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and served as the Multidistrict Litigation Law Clerk to the Judges Lucy Koh, Beth Freeman, and Edward Davila of the Northern District of California. Jeff started his legal career as a staff attorney at Positive Resource Center where he advocated for medical care and Social Security disability benefits for people with HIV and mental health disabilities.
Jeff has been on the BALIF Bar Association board since 2018 and previously served as Treasurer. He is also on the BALIF Foundation Board, where he serves as Treasurer. Jeff is a 2015 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law and Northwestern University Graduate School where he received a J.D. and a Ph.D. in Sociology. He has published multiple articles in law reviews and sociology related to the history of LGBTQ rights, and he continues to present on these topics.
Jeff lives in Oakland with his husband. In his free time, he enjoys running ridiculous distances on mountain trails around the Bay Area (and beyond).

Jane Migachyov

Jane Migachyov was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Central Valley. She went to the East Coast for her education, graduating cum laude from Harvard College. Her undergraduate thesis was nominated for the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for outstanding scholarly work. Pursuing a desire to do public interest work, Jane attended the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, receiving a Masters in Public Policy. Her Master’s thesis received the Manny C. Carballo Memorial Prize for best thesis dealing with social policy issues. Jane completed her education on the East Coast at Boston University, where she received a Juris Doctor degree. After graduating from law school, Jane practiced in general civil litigation for five years in the Bay Area before starting her career in family law.
Jane is passionate about advocacy in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community, serving four years as a committee member of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Advisory Committee, San Francisco Human Rights Commission, serving on the Board of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club and Freedom from Tobacco, an LGBT anti-smoking group. She is a member of the LGBTQI Chamber of Commerce – the Golden Gate Business Association. She also served on the Board of the Harvard Gender & Sexuality Caucus, Harvard’s LGBTQI alumni organization from 2018-2020. She has been on the BALIF Board since 2018.
Additionally, Jane values helping people have access to the legal system. She worked as a mentor at the Bayview/Hunters Point Community Legal Clinic, providing guidance in family law cases. She has done pro bono family law work through the Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco. Finally, she volunteered for Legal Aid at Work’s Workers’ Rights Clinic.

Daniel H. Galindo

Daniel represents employees facing discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and unlawful termination. He also enforces California labor law through class actions and has counseled executives regarding compensation and severance negotiations. Prior to starting his own law office, Daniel was an associate attorney of Medina Orthwein LLP and the Ottinger Law Firm, P.C. where he represented employees at all levels and in multiple industries.
Prior to practicing, Daniel clerked at the law firm of Rosen, Bien, Galvan & Grunfeld LLP and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he was a Tony Patiño Fellow. As a law student, Daniel took a case on appeal to the Ninth Circuit, was an editor of the Hastings Law Journal, and Founder and Chair of the Hastings American Constitution Society. He also served in leadership positions in OUTLAW and Hastings Students for Immigrants’ Rights. Daniel also participated in UC Hastings’ nationally recognized moot court program as a competitor, coach, board member, and teaching assistant.
Before law school, Daniel was a community organizer and policy advocate for the American Civil Liberties Union advocating LGBTQ youth and immigrants. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Studies and minor in French literature from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. His focus on international relations and the Middle East took him abroad to Amman, Jordan where he studied Arabic and diplomacy at the University of Jordan.
Daniel currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and on the Board of Directors of the Bay Area Lawyers For Individual Freedom, the nation’s oldest LGBT bar association.
Daniel is a member of numerous professional organizations including the California Employment Lawyers Association and the California Lawyers Association. Daniel is admitted to practice in all courts of California, the United States District Court for Northern and Eastern Districts of California and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Stephan Ferris

Stephan Ferris is a rising 3L at UC Hastings from Las Vegas, Nevada. At eighteen, he moved to San Francisco and has enjoyed the sun shining on the city by The Bay for the past eleven years. He achieved his Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast and Electronic Communication from San Francisco State, and he created the university’s first emphasis in Law and Regulation of Media. He spent his 1L summer at the office of solo practitioner Okan Sengun, working to gain asylum for LGBT immigrants and worked as a law clerk at Outten & Golden his 2L Spring. Currently, Stephan is working as a judicial intern for the honnorable Richard L. Sippel at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. Stephan has advocated for the LGBT and HIV-positive communities on an international scale since his residency in California. He has a passion for media and during law school has developed an interest in copyright and trademark law, working his way towards a concentration in intellectual property. This year, Stephan served as the Senior Symposium editor for the Hastings Women’s Law Journal, booking panelists for the annual symposium entitled “Beyond Prevention: Defeating HIV” and will serve as the journal’s incoming Managing Editor. In addition to his work on the journal, Stephan served as President of the LGBT group OUTLAW and was recently elected to the Board of Directors of BALIF (Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom). Outside of class, Stephan enjoys horror movies, musical theatre, concerts, and drag shows.
Kel O'Hara
Equal Rights Advocates | Gala Chair
Kel O’Hara (they/them) is an Equal Justice Fellow sponsored by Intel Corporation and Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP at Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco. Their work focuses on protecting access to education for LGBTQ+ student survivors of sexual violence. Kel graduated from UC Berkeley Law School in 2019 and from Tufts University in 2014 with a B.A. in American Studies and Drama. Outside of work Kel is a performer and storyteller, a nature enthusiast, and a firm believer in midday dance breaks.

Rafael Langer-Osuna is a partner at Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP where they focus on two different areas of litigation. On the one hand, they try cases in state and federal courts for and against foreign sovereigns. On the other, they litigate disputes involving start up technology companies or the internet, including cases arising from online defamation, the use of copyrighted materials on social media, data breaches, data privacy, hacking, and software licensing conflicts. Rafael is barred in California and Florida and has been admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit as well as several district courts throughout the country.
Rafael dedicates a significant amount of time to studying and bettering the world around them. They maintain an active pro bono practice assisting the Transgender Law Center’s asylum efforts, working for environmental groups, winning cases for local charitable organizations, and helping to improve gender equity. In addition to serving as Co-Chair of BALIF’s Community Activism and Social Action Committee, Rafael also currently serves as a non-binary support group facilitator, director of the Western Cave Conservancy, chairperson of San Francisco Bay Chapter of the National Speleological Society, and an advisory board member for the Squire Patton Boggs Foundation.
Rafael was born in Bolivia, grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has lived all over the country. They earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University (BA), UC Berkeley (MA in Education), and Duke (JD/MA in East Asian Studies) and studied in Hong Kong SAR and Nanjing, China. In their spare time, Rafael parents two teenagers, reads voraciously, practices Daoist arts, cooks vegetarian meals for friends, gardens, and surveys California’s caves and reefs.
