The ABA is reaching out…and we need to respond. The diversity of the ABA leadership…

The ABA is reaching out…and we need to respond. The diversity of the ABA leadership is shocking!!!! Of the chairs of over 80 committees, 9 are African Americans, 4 are Latinos and 1 is Asian Pacific Islander. The committee memberships are just as appalling if not more so. We need women, racial/ethnic minorities, LGBT, disabled lawyers and other underrepresented lawyers. All the national bars of color have received a letter from Steve Zack. Soon the above memo will go out to the Minority Bars from the chair of the Diversity Center , IS Johnson, who is also on our appointments committee.

FIRST, YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE ABA . THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS MARCH 1.

Here are some helpful tips:

1. The application is all online. You can access it at
http://www.abanet.org/scripts/nomination10/appointments.jsp

2. Scroll down to the bottom of Steve Zack’s letter to review the
available committees.

3. Fill out the application online. It is important that YOU fill
out an application to show interest in the appointment.

4. It is very helpful to have others nominate and support your
application. Here are some ideas:
a. Your national ethnic bar association can send in a list of those they support. Be sure to be part of that list.
b. Any friends that you have in leadership at the ABA
or your local/state bar association.
c. The committee/council/commission that you want to
join can also advocate for you.

5. Supporting nominations will need to go online to do so, just
like your own application.

The more people/organizations that you have supporting your nomination, the better your chances. Committee appointments are very competitive for some committees.

WE NEED YOU!!!!

A message from the AABA

Dear Members:

We urgently need your help to sign letters in support of our friend, Magistrate Judge Edward Chen of California , whose nomination by President Obama to the federal court, Northern District of California, has been attacked despite having an excellent record as a magistrate judge.

It just takes 15 seconds to send Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada a letter in support of Judge Chen through an online form at http://FairJudges.net.

AABA has invested considerable efforts to raise awareness of the absence of an Asian American judge in the Northern District of California. In addition to an op-ed, “An Indefensible Lack of Diversity on the U.S. District Court,” by then-AABA President Celia Lee and Judge Ken Kawaichi published in the San Francisco Chronicle in Feb. 2009, our leadership and members have played roles in encouraging our Senators and the President to appoint people of color to the bench.

President Obama and our Senators did just that. And we need to finish what we helped start and move the Senate to bring Ed Chen’s nomination to a full Senate vote.

Judge Chen’s character has been attacked despite his mainstream values and a demonstrated record serving as a balanced, fair and unbiased jurist. He has received extremely positive support from a diverse group of individuals and organizations, including a “Unanimously Well Qualified” rating by the American Bar Association.

The President had to re-nominate Judge Chen on Jan. 20 because the Senate did not take a full vote on the nomination by the end of last year, despite it being approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in October. The President originally nominated Judge Chen to the federal court in Aug. 2009 on recommendation from U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California .

Among his numerous awards, Judge Chen was voted “Judge of the Year” by the Barristers Club of San Francisco in 2007 and was California Law Review’s “Alumnus of the Year” in 2002. He has received endorsements from a wide range of groups and individuals, including federal prosecutors, city attorneys, police officer associations, and numerous national and local civic and community organizations. Judge Chen was also part of the historic legal team that overturned the conviction of Fred Korematsu more than 40 years after the fact in a coram nobis case.

Judge Chen’s nomination deserves a straight up-or-down vote in the Senate and you can help make that happen by sending a letter to Majority Leader Reid.

Complete the very short online form at http://FairJudges.net and your letter to Majority Leader Reid with be sent at no expense to you. And then please email your friends and contacts asking them to sign on to letters as well. You can use the email template here: http://www.box.net/shared/f796knb372.

Sincerely,
AABA Officers & Board
