Description: Special 25th Anniversary Screening and Benefit for Choosing Children

BALIF is proud to co-sponsor a special 25th anniversary screening of the landmark documentary, Choosing Children. The film takes an intimate look at the joys and challenges experienced by six different lesbian-headed families as they make decisions about how to become pregnant, navigate the process of adoption, contemplate whether to involve men in parenting, and take in reactions from relatives, doctors and schoolmates – all more than more than two decades ago!

The film was produced by Kim Klausner and Debra Chasnoff, and helped launch the LGBT baby boom. This special screening and benefit will raise funds to permanently preserve the film on DVD. The restored 35 mm film print, courtesy of the OUTFEST Legacy Project and the UCLA Film Archive, was a huge hit at last summer’s Los Angeles Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

The screening and benefit will be held on Tuesday, September 14 at the Herbst Theater in the War Memorial Veterans Building at 401 Van Ness Ave. , San Francisco . Doors open at 6:30 PM, with the program and screening at 7:00 PM. A dessert reception will follow at 8:30 PM. The program will feature remarks by The Honorable Donna Hitchens, co-founder of NCLR, who was interviewed in the original 1985 film; as well as remarks by family members from the original film 25 years later. BALIF and BASF will be honoring Jerome Roth, Mark Conrad and Miriam Seifter
of Munger, Tolles and Olson who represented BALIF, BASF and other groups in
an amicus filing in the Perry v. Schwarzenegger case. Following the awards,
members of the Perry trial team from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, the San
Francisco City Attorney’s office and others will provide an inside
perspective on the Prop 8 trial, Judge Walker’s decision, and what comes
next as the Prop. 8 federal challenge moves forward.

In case you haven’t responded to recent e-mails inviting you to become part of BALIF’s exciting new mentoring program, “Connections,” the time to sign up is now!  We are in the roll-out process and will be completing the initial pairings of mentors and mentees by mid-August.  Law students and lawyers can participate.  Young and established lawyers can be mentors to students, and students and newer lawyers can be mentees.  If you’d like to be part of connections, please advise Dennis Raglin, the Young Lawyers & Students Committee Chair, at dennis.raglin@sdma.com as soon as you can with whether you’d like to be a mentor or a mentee and whether you have a specialty and gender preference for your pairing.  You can also e-mail him with any questions about the program.  AND SAVE THE DATE of September 23 at 6:30 p.m. for the first mentoring get together where we will discuss goals for the program and for making the most of LGBT mentoring!
